Data logger MSR165: spectacular acceleration measurements for TV magazine "Galileo"

Regarding the topic Middle Ages, the scenes of great classic films have often stuck in our minds as being historical true. Now, the popular science magazine „Galileo“ of the German private television station ProSieben wanted to find out: what truth is in Hollywood’s film myths and do the dramatic stunts of Robin Hood & Co also work in real life?

The following masters of their profession were in the line of duty for Galileo: Stuntman Matthias Schendel, knight Thomas Brennauer and Juergen Baumann, German champion in crossbow shooting ventured well prepared on exercises Robin Hood or the first knight just did in passing: shoot themselves over a wall by means of a catapult, fend off the shot of a crossbow by means of a sword or split a 1,50 m long tree trunk lengthwise with a sword - is all this really possible or not?

Indispensable for the careful preparation of these tests: previous measurement of the g-forces. Thus, a MSR165 Data logger with integrated 3-axes-acceleration sensor was applied in order to test at a dummy how strong the acceleration forces are when the puppet is shot out of a catapult. The MSR Data logger was therefore attached to the dummy (skeleton–see caption), was shot out of the catapult and the measured acceleration forces were directly analysed on site.
